ESG PROJECT - MACHAKOS WOMEN’S PRISON

Sometimes, the best way to change lives is to plant a seed. Literally.

At Kenya Highland Seed, we recently kicked off an Environmental, Social, and Governance (E.S.G) project called “Our Shamba” at Machakos Women’s Prison, working hand in hand with the Sukuma Twende Team. The goal? To help the women there learn practical farming skills while growing fresh produce for their daily use.

You could feel the excitement from day one. The team prepared the groundplanted vegetables, and shared farming tips using our Royal Seed varieties. Everyone had a role to play — from turning the soil to watering the young seedlings. It was hard work, but also pure joy watching the shamba come to life.

The women loved it. Some said they had never planted anything before. Others shared how they hoped to start small gardens when they return home. For us, that’s what this project is all about — giving people the tools to rebuild their lives through farming.

The Sukuma Twende Team added their special energy, organizing the sessions and motivating everyone to keep going. Together, we turned a bare patch of land into a green space full of promise.

It’s a small farm, but the impact is hugeFresh vegetables now grow where there was once dust. Skills grow too — along with confidence and hope.

We believe real change begins when communities work together. So, the next time you think of planting something, remember this project at Machakos. Every seed can spark a fresh start.
